Spooky Season & Writing

Well, here we are again, with another Spooky Season upon us. It just so happens to be my favorite season of the year, along with my favorite time of year to sit down and get some writing done.

Here in sunny Southern California, summer never leaves quietly. It usually takes until mid-October before the 90-degree days finally peter out. This week we’re looking at over 100 degree temps with high humidity, which is going to suck.

I am looking forward to the cooler daytime temperatures and the chilly nights. I have started putting together plans for Halloween parties and house decorations. I want to be able to use my oven again without making the inside of the house unbearable. And I want to write.

I’m taking a little break to write this post but then I’ll dive headfirst back into editing. I have 40 pages and several major changes to go in my WIP: the third and final installment of the Doomsday series. And this is what my brain looks like right now:

I started writing my Doomsday series as part of National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) in 2011. The story started as a fish out of water tale about a normal teenager, Elliot Vane, accidentally being placed in a school for Villains in book 1, Every Day is Like Doomsday. I realized I wasn’t done telling Elliot’s story and completed book 2, Doomsday Strikes Again, as another NaNoWriMo entry.

Now I’m wrapping up the series with book 3, Doomsday Changes Everything, because it just feels right. Over the years the story has evolved: it now crosses continents and dimensions, involves several Villain factions fighting for supremacy, and explores the question, what exactly makes a Villain a Villain? Throughout Elliot’s many tribulations and betrayals, he finds friendship, chosen family, loyalty and love. And isn’t that what we all want in the end?

I’m going to turn on my AC now because it’s already 85 degrees with 90% humidity, then I’ll pour myself a glass of ice cold water because it’s noon and hydration is important, and dive back into editing my wondrous world of Villains.

Does anyone else feel the same way about changing seasons bringing inspiration? Good luck to all you who are settling down to write this autumn. May the changing leaves or chilly temps or dry Santa Ana winds bring you mental clarity and much wordiness.
